Important Update on Palm OS Support

Nokia Intellisync Handheld Edition does support Palm OS 5.0 and the various Palm email clients as follows:

Nokia Intellisync Handheld Edition supports "Mail" and "Mobile Mail" clients on Palm OS devices.

Nokia Intellisync Handheld Edition is capable of synchronizing mail between any supported desktop PIM (Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes, etc.) and either the Mail (mail.prc) mail client or the Mobile Mail 3.5.5 mail client on any Palm OS device.

Nokia Intellisync Handheld Edition Patch for Mobile Mail

Nokia has an email patch for Mobile Mail that can be downloaded for free. Installing this patch over an existing installation of Nokia Intellisync Handheld Edition desktop will modify the Palm connector to add support for Mobile Mail 3.5.5. Adding support for Mobile Mail will remove support for Mail.

Nokia Intellisync Handheld Edition support for Sony's CLIÉ Mail and Palm's VersaMail

Nokia is working with both Sony and Palm Solutions Group to add support for both CLIÉ Mail and VersaMail.

Nokia Intellisync Handheld Edition Support for Palm OS 5.0

Nokia has completed testing of Nokia Intellisync Handheld Edition on Palm OS 5.0 (including 5.1 and 5.2) devices from both Palm and Sony. Nokia Intellisync Handheld Edition 5.5 is fully compatible with the standard Palm OS PIM applications (Address, Date Book, To-Do, Memo).

Nokia Intellisync Handheld Edition 5.5 is not currently compatible with the email clients bundled with the following devices:

• Palm Tungsten (T and W) which ship with VersaMail
• Sony CLIÉ NX70V/NX60 (and any device running Palm OS 5.x with Sony CLIÉ Mail installed)

A short term workaround is available. Users of Nokia Intellisync Handheld Edition and these devices may download a modified Palm Mail (mail.prc) client and install it on the device in place of VersaMail or CLIÉMail. This allows users to perform email sync with Nokia Intellisync Handheld Edition and to read, reply to, forward, edit and create email on the Palm device. It does not support email attachments or wireless sync on the Tungsten W.

A more detailed explanation of the existing mail client situation across device manufacturers is provided below:

• Palm Solutions Group: Palm Tungsten product CD includes VersaMail 2. 0 (to be installed by the user).
• Sony: Sony CLIÉ NX70V and NX60 product CDs include CLIÉMail, which supports multimedia attachments (not document attachments) and POP3 only.
• Palmsource: currently delivers Mobile Mail 3.5 to licensees, although no existing devices use this client. Future Palm OS 5.X versions may include this client.

Question: What happens if I try to sync Nokia Intellisync Handheld Edition with the new Palm VersaMail or Sony CLIÉMail clients?

The sync operation will proceed as normal and will properly sync your PIM data, but fail to sync email. No error messages will be displayed during the sync process. If the user inspects the HotSync log files they will see that there is no section for email, as if the email section was not selected to be synchronized.

Question: Will I lose any email if I try to sync Palm VersaMail or Sony CLIÉMail with Nokia Intellisync Handheld Edition?

No. The mail database on the Palm OS device and the mail database on the the desktop PC will remain as they were before the sync occurred. No mail messages will be transferred, deleted or edited by the sync process.
